In an effort to increase bicyclist safety and educate drivers, the City of Brookings will begin the process of adding “Sharrow” markings to Railroad Street from Pacific Avenue to Oak Street. These markings will be the first in a pilot program outlined. in the City’s Transportation Plan designed to help make city streets safer and increase alternative transportation.
“Sharrow Striping” is installed in a vehicular lane where the biker has the legal right to bike according to Oregon vehicular code Section 814.400. Sharrows are simply a marking to guide bicyclists to the best place to ride and help motorists to understand that they should expect to see and share the lane with bicyclists. Sharrows can drastically increase safety by informing bicyclists of a safe distance from parked car doors opening and from the shoulder of the road.
Locals, visitors and Oregon Coast bike riders will benefit from the sharrows by routing them along a safer alternative route through town. Striping is anticipated to occur in the next few weeks.
