The Railroad Street sidewalk project…which also corrects drainage problems and widens portions of the roadway…is now complete.

“We have some minor grading and conformation paving on adjacent provide property finish, but the sidewalk and street is open for public use,” said City Manager Pro Tem Gary Milliman.

“We now have a fully-accessible transportation corridor along the entire commercial length of Railroad Street, which has been a City Council goal for decades,” said Mayor Ron Hedenskog.

The $556,116 project included the installation and upgrade of storm drain lines in the area to resolve period street flooding, and paved a parking lane on the portions of the south side of the street.

“We were able to patch together funding from a variety of sources for downtown street improvements, including local Fuel Tax revenue, grant funds and property tax received through the Urban Renewal Agency,” Milliman said.

The City contracted with McLennan Excavation Inc. of Brookings to do the work through a competitive bidding process.

“Materials cost increases, and supply chain delays for things like pipe and fire hydrants are challenging our ability to keep up with and pay for the street improvement program approved by the City Council,” Milliman noted.  “We have made great progress thanks to local taxpayer support.”
