The City of Brookings is advising property owners to inspect all above ground private drainage ditches before winter to reduce loose debris and trash from entering into downstream storm conveyances causing flooding and drainage obstructions.
The City's storm drain system is comprised of a network of private and public drainage as well as above ground and below ground drainage which eventually drains to the ocean. During high rain events, City employees respond at all hours to clear clogged drains. Items such as yard clippings, basketballs, Christmas trees, and trash have been removed. Public awareness can help decrease the risk of localized flooding and clogging of the storm drain system.
The City recently notified property owners with known stormwater drains by mail asking for their cooperation in reducing the risk of flooding incidents. Questions concerning storm drain issues can be directed to Building Official Garrett Thomson at 541-469-1135.
