The
decorative bases for 16 downtown street light poles will be re-installed
beginning this week as work continues to recondition 58 downtown benches.
The green
light poles and benches were installed about 12 years ago as a part of a
downtown improvement project.
“The
powder-coat paint on the light pole bases had become chipped and peeled over
time,” City Manager Gary Milliman said.
“Some of the bases were damaged by encounters with skateboards and other
miss-use. Once the powder-coating is
compromised, our coastal weather takes over and further erodes the paint.”
The cost of
reconditioning the 16 poles bases was $11,625.
The bases were sent to a contractor in Medford for the work.
Benches are
being reconditioned by Sea Clear Window Washing at a cost of $350 each. The 58 benches are being removed and replaced
five at a time.
The City is
also exploring ways to “brighten up” the light poles as the paint has dulled
over the years.
Matching
litter receptacles installed as a part of the downtown project have been
replaced with high density plastic receptacles that are more weather resilient
and easier to service, and are being emptied by Curry Transfer and Recycling at
no charge to the City.
