Improvements to Chetco Point Park were the focus of a special meeting of the Brookings City Council this week.
Chetco Point Park is located on Wharf Street near the City’s wastewater treatment plant. The park offers dramatic ocean and shoreline vistas, with many native plants growing on the island-like headlands.
The City Council approved a $33,700 contract with Tidewater Contractors to pave the Chetco Point Park parking lot. Paving and reorienting the traffic flow through the parking lot will double the capacity of the lot to 32 spaces.
“This project has been on our improvement list for over a decade,” said City Manager Gary Milliman. We finally have sufficient funds to undertake the work.” The project will be funded with park System Replacement Fees (SRF) which are paid by City water and sewer utility customers.
The second project will be the installation of a restroom at the park. The restroom will be located along the Chetco Point Trail on the south side of the wastewater treatment plant. The portable toilet, which the City has maintained in the parking lot for more than 15 years, has been removed.
“With the addition of a restroom within the park, we hope to encourage longer park visits,” said Parks/Planning Manager Tony Baron. “In addition to the trails that lead to the headlands and the beach, the park also has picnic benches and horseshoe courts.”
The cost of the prefabricated restroom is $42,797 and the City will use System Development Charge (SDC) funds generated by new development to pay for the project. The City will be contracting locally for the installation of a foundation and plumbing to accommodate the concrete restroom structure.
“We are happy to see these and other park improvement projects progressing,” said Mayor Jake Pieper.
The City recently received a $200,000 gift from a private party to fund improvements to the Chetco Point Park trail. Design work for that project is in progress. Baron is preparing the design plans and serves as the project manager for all parks improvements.
