[ARCHIVED] Modification to Treatment Plant Completed

New bar screen at treatment plant

A major component of the Brookings Wastewater Treatment Plant has been replaced, Public Works/Development Services Director Paul Stevens reported today.

One of the two mechanical bar screens was removed and replaced with a more modern bar screen manufactured by Duperon and installed by Pacific Excavation.

The bar screen is the first phase of wastewater treatment removing sticks, rocks, and other non biological items as sewage enters the plant. The device can be observed in operation from the Chetco Point Park parking lot.

“The new bar screen is working well but some organics were sticking to the bar screen and not flowing into the treatable waste stream” Stevens said.   “Last week, to combat the sticking organics we installed a device known as a ‘fecal blaster’ to wash the sticking organics through the bar screen and on thru to subsequent treatment processes.”

The total cost for this addition was about $8,000.  “This work has been accomplished to assure ongoing 100 per cent compliance with the City’s national treated water discharge permit and to safeguard the environment to the maximum extent possible,” Stevens noted.
