Installation of sidewalk along East Street adjacent to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brookings is now complete.
The City Council awarded a $97,388 contract for the work to Tidewater Contractors, Inc. The work included drainage improvements and the installation of 461 lineal feet of curb, gutter and sidewalk.
“This project is the final link in the sidewalk system along the south side of Easy Street from where it currently terminates at the Dollar General store and through town to Brookings Harbor High School,” said Mayor Ron Hedenskog. The City completed a $543,000 sidewalk project along Easy Street in the vicinity of Kalmiopsis School in 2014.
“This project to improve safety and accessibility was the top priority for pedestrian projects in the City,” Hedenskog said. “We are pleased to see the project completed.”
Easements to facilitate the construction were granted by adjacent property owners, and the work included tying-in private storm drains that discharged into the roadside drainage ditch into a new underground storm drain.
Coos Curry Electric Cooperative also had to relocate and isolate underground facilities in the area where the sidewalk and storm drain was constructed.
The City has applied for some $1,436,800 million in state grant funding for the construction of sidewalks along the east side of Chetco Avenue (Highway 101) between Easy Street and Parkview Drive, and connecting sidewalks along one side of both Ransom Avenue and Parkview Drive. If approved in June by the Oregon Transportation Commission (OTC), this project would be scheduled for construction in 2019-20. The City share of the project would be $359,200.
This is all a part of our continuing effort to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in the City,” Mayor Hedenskog noted.
