[ARCHIVED] Brookings Receives “Bike Friendly” Designation

Last week, the City of Brookings received notification that it had achieved the “Bike Friendly” designation through the Travel Oregon Association.

The designation will allow Brookings to be added to a list on the Travel Oregon and Ride Oregon Ride websites that encourages bicycling enthusiasts to seek out businesses that carry the label.

Earning the designation required that Brookings demonstrate its commitment to enhancing the Oregon biking experience for visitors and serving cyclists by providing certain amenities. At its visitors’ center, located inside City Hall, Brookings offers public restrooms, water refill, bike parking, long-term vehicle parking (approved by the Police Department) and a tire pump.

City Manager Gary Milliman said, “We are very pleased to have earned this designation. The city understands that the bicycling public is a major contributor to tourism revenues.”

Bicycle tourism is a growing industry in Oregon and is having an increasing economic impact on communities that welcome bike visitors.

A study by Travel Oregon found that an overnight bike tourist had 19 times the economic impact of a day tourist, and that 25 per cent of Oregon’s 17 million annual tourists ride bicycles while visiting. Bicycle travelers in Oregon spend $400 million annually, or about $1.1 million per day.

“We’ve all seen the increasing number of bicyclists…including many international tourists…travelling down Highway 101 from Portland and headed for California,” Milliman said. “Being a bike friendly community means that these visitors will know what services and amenities are offered for cyclists in Brookings.”

Through Travel Oregon, bicyclists will be able to find information on services and amenities catering to their needs on their mobile devices, and on the Travel Oregon website while planning their trip along the Oregon coast.

“The goal here is to encourage more bike tourists to plan a stop…hopefully an overnight stop…in Brookings as a part of their travel itinerary,” Milliman said.

Travel Oregon’s Bike Friendly Business program is the first of its kind in the nation. Travel Oregon will officially recognize Bike Friendly businesses that demonstrate a commitment to serving visitors who ride bikes and who provide specific amenities those riders may need. Participating businesses receive special recognition and marketing exposure through Travel Oregon’s advertising network.

The City is encouraging other tourism-focused businesses in Brookings to apply for this free program. In fact, City staff has scheduled a workshop for local businesses which may be interested in securing a “Bike Friendly Business” designation. The workshop will be Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the Emergency Operations Center. All businesses that provide services to travelers are welcome to participate in the workshop. “We will have staff present to assist people in signing up for the Bike Friendly Business designation,” Milliman said.

Tourism-focused businesses which are interested in more information can go to industry.traveloregon.com to see the requirements and application process.
