[ARCHIVED] Brookings Approves Street Improvements

Street overlays at various locations in Brookings will proceed as soon as there is a stretch of good weather, City Manager Gary Milliman said today.

The City Council awarded a $189,606 contract to Tidewater Construction to overlay portions of five streets. Funding from the City’s local voter-approved fuel tax will be used for the project.

Streets affected will include Center Street between Chetco and Railroad, Fern Avenue between Elk and Easy, Hemlock Street between Fern and Willow, Arnold Street between Rowland and Chetco, and Ransom Avenue between Sixth Street and Kevin.

Street surfaces will be milled and potholes will be filled before the two-inch asphalt overlay is installed.

“This was a really good bid and it appears we will be able to add some additional work within the current year budget,” Milliman said. “We are reviewing our priority list now and will discuss adding additional streets with the contractor.”

One additional item of work will be to slip-line the 24-inch drainage culvert under Ransom Avenue near Brookhaven. “This work is needed to prevent the newly repaved street from sinking,” Milliman said.
