[ARCHIVED] City Issues Reminder on Gararge Sale Sign Regulations

Brookings area residents planning to conduct garage sales are reminded that garage sale are prohibited from being attached to street lights, utility poles and other public facilities.

The Brookings Municipal Code prohibits signs from being attached to utility poles, light poles, public structures, trees, fire hydrants, bridges, curbs, sidewalks or other surfaces located on public property.

“Taping or wiring signs to the green light poles downtown can damage the poles. The City and other community partners have put in a lot of time and effort to improve the appearance of our downtown area and having a proliferation of signs detracts from this effort,” City Manager Milliman said. “Signs can also create a safety hazard when utility workers encounter nails protruding from poles or, for example, when signs are attached to regulatory signs…like STOP signs.”

City staff will remove any such signs found along Chetco Avenue attached to poles, trees, street furniture or located in Bankus Park (the landscaped area along Chetco between Ross Road and Ray’s Market driveway) and take them to City Hall. If the sign owner can be identified, they will be contacted by City staff who will advise them of the regulations.

“We recognize that garage and yard sales are a popular recreational activity in our community,” Milliman said. “We encourage residents to find other ways to advertise their sales, including advertising in the local newspaper and the internet, or arranging with private property owners to allow posting of direction signs.”
