[ARCHIVED] City Council to Hold Workshop on Sign Standards

Sign regulations will be the subject of a Brookings City Council Workshop to be held on April 6 at 7:00 PM, in City Hall Council Chambers, 898 Elk Drive.

The workshop was prompted by concerns expressed by some merchants along Chetco Avenue who received notice from the city that flags containing written text, such as business names or advertising services offered at the business, were subject to the City’s sign regulations.

Some merchants also received notice to remove business flags and banners from the public sidewalk. The flag holders installed a few years ago along Chetco Avenue were provided to support the “Avenue of the Flags” project, whereby American Flags are displayed along the highway on holidays.

At its meeting of February 23, the City Council announced that it would conduct a workshop to review the entire sign ordinance, and that downtown merchants would receive notice of the workshop.

The City’s sign regulations are found in Section 17.88 of the Brookings Municipal Code, which can be viewed on the City’s website at www.brookings.or.us. The City’s sign regulations establish standards for signs including size, lighting, garage sales, decorative banners, sandwich boards and placement. The regulations provide for certain exemptions from the sign regulations. There are also special criteria for professional offices, shopping centers and residential neighborhood signs.
