[ARCHIVED] UPDATE - Fifth Street Repaving To Begin May 19

The scheduled starting date for the repaving of Fifth Street has been moved up to noon, Monday, May 19th with a scheduled May 23rd completion date to take advantage of a break in Tidewater's schedule.

For the duration of the project, traffic will be reduced to a single lane from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and closed to all but local residents from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

Curry Medical Center will also close nightly at 7:00 PM throughout the week.

Work is being performed at night to avoid major traffic disruptions on Fifth Street. This may be noisy for nearby residents, but may also be better than closing the street for several days.

The Brookings City Council awarded the contract to Tidewater Contractors, Inc., for repaving the street at a cost of $100,696. The project will involve grinding the street surface and installing a 1.5-inch asphalt overlay.

The City has been preparing for the paving project for several weeks. Preparatory work has included reconstructing several driveways and wheelchair ramps to meet federal disability access standards. The cost of this work was $8,337.
