The City of Brookings Public Works crew recently cleaned up highway shoulder areas between the Chetco River Bridge and Oak Street. Cleanup included removing debris and improving drainage where water seepage over the sidewalk was causing slippery conditions.
The Oregon Department of Transportation has discontinued regular vegetation control along highway shoulders and is now paying the City to perform the work at both ends of the Chetco River Bridge as well as sweeping Highway 101 down to the state line.
The City Council recently discussed making landscape improvements in the area of the Botanical Garden but City Manager Gary Milliman doesn’t think that goal will be realized in the coming budget year. The Botanical Garden is maintained by Brookings Harbor Garden Club volunteers.
