Smoke testing of a portion of the Brookings sewer collection system is scheduled for the week of October 28. Testing will be conducted in the area generally bounded by Wharf Street, Chetco Avenue and the ocean, and includes Del Norte Lane, Park Avenue, Memory Lane, Tanbark Road and the downtown area.
Smoke will be observed coming from manholes in the street and from plumbing centers on the roof or exterior of buildings and may enter structures with defective systems. Observing where the white, nontoxic smoke emerges from the system helps determine specific locations where repairs are needed.
Defective plumbing systems can allow unpleasant and potentially dangerous sewer gases to enter a home or business and should be corrected immediately.
If smoke is visible inside a home or business, ventilate by opening the windows and doors, and notify Public Works staff. Staff will be in the area where testing is being conducted wearing orange jackets or vests and driving white City vehicles.
Residents with concerns about the smoke should contact Building Official LauraLee Snook at City Hall, (541) 469-1131.
Property owners will be notified of any defects found on their property.
