Bring your pruning tools and gardening gloves! Brookings area residents can participate in improving the condition of the native azaleas at Azalea Park by participating in an Azalea Park Pruning Work Party on Wednesday, May 4th from 8 am to noon. Volunteers are invited to meet in the lower parking lot off Old County Road at 8:00 am where work parties will be formed. In collaboration with Curry County Master Gardeners, the City of Brookings has been hosting a series of azalea pruning parties. This program is a result of a visit to Azalea Park by azalea expert Dick “Red” Cavender who evaluated the condition of the native azaleas and made recommendations on how to improve their condition. “Our City’s historic azaleas are in dire need of human intervention, especially pruning to encourage more prolific and robust growth and removal of competing vegetation which has invaded their space,” said City Councilor and Oregon Master Gardener Dennis Triglia.
